Aronian Appeals to Kramnik for Reconciliation Amid Defamation Lawsuit: 'Forgive Me'

In a moving public letter, Grandmaster Levon Aronian has appealed to Vladimir Kramnik, urging reconciliation following Kramnik's defamation lawsuit that has roiled the chess community.

"Dear Vladimir Kramnik, forgive me for addressing you publicly," Aronian began, his tone reflecting respect and concern for the Russian chess legend. The letter surfaced shortly after Kramnik initiated a civil defamation case in Geneva, targeting Chess.com, news outlet Chessdom, and Czech GM David Navara, alleging defamation stemming from disputes over online chess integrity.

Aronian's letter functions as both a heartfelt tribute and an attempt at mediation. He emphasizes Kramnik’s profound impact on his career, referring to him as one of his "chess parents" and attributing a significant portion of his chess intellect to the former World Champion.

He fondly recalls Kramnik’s resilience, citing his triumphs against Garry Kasparov and Peter Leko, as well as his handling of the controversial "Toiletgate" match against Veselin Topalov, celebrating his strength and spirit in the face of adversity.

However, Aronian doesn’t avoid addressing what he perceives as a worrying shift in Kramnik’s recent behavior. "You are fighting your own demons," he wrote, acknowledging the emotional strain of Kramnik’s campaign against alleged cheating in online chess.

The letter follows a period of intense conflict. Earlier this year, Kramnik insinuated that Navara had cheated, prompting Navara to release a letter detailing the severe impact of the accusations on his mental well-being.

Kramnik responded by demanding legal action or silence, eventually filing a lawsuit—a decision that has provoked widespread criticism from the chess world.

Other grandmasters, such as Pavel Eljanov, have voiced their support for Navara, with Eljanov stating that "David is one of the most honest people in chess," a sentiment shared by many.

Aronian concludes his plea with a call for unity: "We are a family... let us start from a fresh page.” His message serves as a reminder of the complexities of human relationships within the often-divisive chess world, suggesting that reconciliation remains a possibility.
