Birmingham: From the moment Jasprit Bumrah entered the Edgbaston Cricket Ground nets, his focus was clear. After a brief walk, he immediately began his routine, culminating in a precise setup at his mark in the center net.
Following a gentle warm-up, Bumrah gradually increased his pace, ultimately marking his run-up for an intense 20-minute bowling spell. With several key batsmen absent, Bumrah focused his efforts on Sai Sudharsan, Ravindra Jadeja, and Karun Nair.
He challenged the batsmen with precision and varied his angles effectively, utilizing both sides of the wicket. Beyond his technical skill, Bumrah appeared mentally sharp, benefiting from a three-day break before joining Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna in tandem.
The trio, who all played in the Headingley Test, trained purposefully on the second day in Birmingham, following a lighter first practice. Each bowler delivered approximately thirty minutes of bowling before practicing their batting in the nets.
Siraj concentrated on defensive techniques with batting coach Sitanshu Kotak, while Bumrah explored various bowling styles. His session included side-arm deliveries, slow bowling, and throwdowns. He also practiced his batting, demonstrating increasing confidence throughout the day.
Meanwhile, Ravindra Jadeja continued his batting practice, and Arshdeep Singh and Akash Deep continued to impress. Kuldeep Yadav dedicated himself to both batting and bowling, leaving nothing to chance in his preparation.
The left-arm wrist-spinner actively sought feedback from coaches and teammates, experimenting with angles and lengths. With dry conditions anticipated in Birmingham, the Indian team might consider Kuldeep for the second Test. His physical condition appears excellent, and his bowling rhythm has been consistent since the pre-series sessions in Leeds. He engaged in a competitive session with Gill before the first Test and has continued these battles in Birmingham.
Kuldeep has also dedicated significant time to improving his batting under the guidance of head coach Gautam Gambhir and batting coach Sitanshu Kotak. For the past 18 months, he has worked diligently to develop his batting skills and contribute meaningfully with the bat.
After two days of training, the team will take a break before reconvening on June 30. The bowlers will have time to rest, and bowling coach Morne Morkel can continue his lighthearted wrestling with Arshdeep and Akash Deep. The uncertainty surrounding Bumrah's role will persist for at least the next 48 hours.
