Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has issued a challenge to KL Rahul, urging him to display greater consistency in Test cricket. This call to action comes as Rahul steps into a more senior role within the team, following the departures of veterans like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
KL Rahul needs to perform consistently in the upcoming tests.
Rahul, now one of the most experienced batsmen in a relatively youthful Indian batting order, is expected to provide both stability and leadership, backing it up with consistent performances at the crease.
Manjrekar's comments come in light of Rishabh Pant solidifying his position within the Indian lineup. Pant recently achieved the rare feat of scoring twin centuries in a Test match, only the second wicketkeeper in cricket history to do so, mirroring a previous achievement by Andy Flower.
Manjrekar, speaking on Star Sports, lauded Pant's dedication to the longer format of the game. "I think he will because it seems like he enjoys batting in Test cricket. Any batter who gets two hundreds in a Test match, it takes a lot out of you mentally, not so much physically, getting a hundred in the first innings, and 48 hours later, you have the same kind of reserve to get another hundred. So that is a hallmark of an exceptional player," he said.
Manjrekar emphasized that KL Rahul must avoid a reputation for sporadic performances and instead demonstrate sustained consistency throughout the series.
"I see Pant carrying his form, but there is another senior batter in the team, who now has got no choice but to carry his form right through the series. Indian cricket needs him badly, and KL Rahul cannot be a one-hundred wonder or a one-Test-match performer," Manjrekar stated.
The spotlight is now firmly fixed on Rahul, with elevated expectations accompanying his role as the senior-most batter in India's Test lineup. Pant's recent exploits have established a high benchmark, underscoring his capacity to consistently deliver in the red-ball format.
As the team navigates a period of transition, the onus is on experienced players like Rahul to guide the team and help the younger players adapt to this evolving phase.
