His McLaren teammate, Oscar Piastri, finished third after a compromised final lap in Q3, due to a spin by Pierre Gasly.

Following a collision between the two McLaren drivers in Canada, where Norris retired, this result marks a significant turnaround for the British driver.

"Nice to see the old me back every now and then," Norris exclaimed on team radio. "It was a good lap, that's for sure. I guess it was little bit, by little bit. My Q1 was good but I knew there was a few places where I could get a bit more time, and I did exactly that. I did what I planned to do, so very happy."

The Austrian Grand Prix presents an opportunity for Norris to close the gap on Piastri in the championship standings. McLaren's strong performance suggests that Norris may need to fend off his teammate during the race.

Piastri was only 0.062 seconds behind Leclerc in his first Q3 run. Leclerc's P2 result marked his best qualifying performance since the Monaco Grand Prix.

"It was the fact I didn't get to start it, that was the problem," Piastri said, referencing the incident with Gasly. "Lando has been very quick all weekend so it would have been a tough challenge, but I think we easily had enough pace in the car this weekend to get on the front row. Always a shame when you don't get the chance."

Lewis Hamilton secured fourth position, marking his best qualifying result of the season. This underscored the performance gains Ferrari seems to have achieved with their upgraded floor.

Max Verstappen was forced to abandon his final Q3 attempt due to the yellow flags, and will start seventh. Racing Bull's Liam Lawson finished ahead of him in sixth, while George Russell of Mercedes will start from fifth.

Gabriel Bortoleto, making his Q3 debut, will start eighth for Sauber, ahead of Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli and Gasly.

Fernando Alonso will start 11th for Aston Martin, followed by Alex Albon in 12th. Isack Hadjar qualified 13th for Racing Bulls, ahead of Franco Colapinto in the Alpine and Oliver Bearman in the Haas.

Lance Stroll missed out on Q2 and will start 16th. Esteban Ocon was 17th, followed by Yuki Tsunoda, who complained of a lack of front grip and qualified 18th.

Carlos Sainz sustained damage to his Williams and will start 19th, ahead of Nico Hülkenberg in the Sauber.
