Despite Shreyas Iyer's impressive performances in the ICC Champions Trophy, IPL, and domestic red-ball season, Aakash Chopra suggests a Test call-up isn't imminent. Chopra highlights that players like Karun Nair, Sarfaraz Khan, and Dhruv Jurel are ahead in the queue.

Shreyas Iyer's Test Debut on Hold, Claims Cricket Pundit

Despite impressive performances across all formats of the game, Shreyas Iyer is unlikely to break into the Indian Test squad anytime soon. According to former India opener Aakash Chopra, the 30-year-old will have to remain patient.

Chopra acknowledged Iyer's stellar run, including being India's top scorer in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and his excellent form in the IPL and domestic red-ball season. However, he believes several other players are ahead of Iyer in the pecking order for Test selection.

"Shreyas Iyer won’t get a chance now. Many others haven’t gotten a chance either," Chopra stated on his YouTube channel. He pointed out that players like Karun Nair, Sarfaraz Khan, and Dhruv Jurel are also waiting for their opportunities. "If he cannot even get among those who are in the waiting line, then how can he be considered for selection?" he questioned.

Iyer's recent form has been remarkable. In the 2024–25 Ranji Trophy, he amassed 480 runs in just seven innings, boasting an average of 68.57 and a strike rate exceeding 90. He followed this up with a career-best IPL season, scoring 604 runs in 17 matches and captaining Punjab Kings to their first final in nine years.

Despite these achievements, Chopra emphasized the need for patience in securing a Test spot. "I know he had a good first-class season. He had a good IPL, took Punjab Kings to the final, did well in white-ball cricket — but his time will come in Tests. He will have to wait just a little bit."

Meanwhile, Sarfaraz Khan, another strong contender, continues to make his case. Following three fifties and a 150 in six Tests, he scored 92 for India A against England Lions and then followed that up with a century in the intra-squad match before the England series.
