Chelsea Clinches Deal for Dortmund's Jamie Gittens in Blockbuster Transfer
Chelsea has successfully negotiated an agreement with Borussia Dortmund to acquire the services of Jamie Gittens for a fee potentially reaching €65 million ($76.1m), ESPN sources confirm.
Earlier reports from ESPN indicated that representatives from both clubs engaged in direct discussions in the United States during the Club World Cup. These negotiations have now culminated in a definitive agreement.
The highly-rated 20-year-old winger has reportedly agreed to a seven-year contract with the Premier League side and is slated to undergo a medical examination within the next 48 hours.
Despite FIFA regulations allowing teams to register up to two additional players for the Club World Cup, Gittens will be ineligible to represent Chelsea in the competition. This restriction stems from his appearance as a substitute for Dortmund against Fluminense during the group stage, rendering him cup-tied.
Prior to reaching this agreement, Chelsea had two previous offers turned down by Dortmund. The highest bid, totaling €50 million including add-ons, failed to meet the German club's valuation of the player.
Gittens' arrival at Stamford Bridge will see him join a growing contingent of former Manchester City players. He follows Liam Delap, who recently joined from Ipswich Town for £30m. Cole Palmer and Tosin Adarabioyo also have previous ties to Man City.
Despite securing the Gittens deal, Chelsea's pursuit of attacking reinforcements will continue. The club is reportedly interested in Brighton forward João Pedro, but faces competition from Newcastle for his signature.
