After being peripheral at Washington Freedom, Tajinder Dhillon took the punt of going into the domestic draft where MI NY picked him and opened new doors for the big-hitter

Tajinder Singh Dhillon's recent performance has turned heads in the cricketing world, marking a significant moment in his career. His explosive innings for MI New York showcased the talent that had long been simmering beneath the surface.

Dhillon outshines Pooran with powerful hitting

Tajinder Singh Dhillon eclipsed Nicholas Pooran with his sensational hitting against Seattle Orcas.

Earlier this year, Dhillon faced a pivotal decision ahead of the MLC domestic draft. He had the option of remaining with the San Francisco Unicorns, where his opportunities were limited, or seeking a fresh start with a team willing to invest in his batting prowess. This decision wasn't solely about cricket; it was a family matter, considering his newborn child. He could have opted for the security of a $55,000 retainer with the Unicorns, but he chose to gamble on himself. He wanted a shot at the big stage, the one with the spotlight he had previously glimpsed in the IPL.

Hailing from Dholpur, Rajasthan, Dhillon possesses an indomitable spirit. He wasn't content with a life in the shadows. Despite the financial uncertainties, he entered the domestic draft, determined to prove his worth.

MI New York's management recognized Dhillon's potential and wasted no time in bringing him back into their setup. Dhillon had been previously acquired by their parent franchise, Mumbai Indians, in the 2019 IPL. The MI New York team narrowly missed securing him in the 2023 MLC draft. Throughout the current season, he has held the support of the team's leadership. Although he had demonstrated promise in short bursts, the defining innings remained elusive until recently.

Against the Orcas, Dhillon was promoted to number 4 for the first time in his MLC career. He seized the opportunity with ferocity. Initially cautious, he scored 5 off 9 deliveries before unleashing a torrent of aggressive shots. He decimated the Orcas' bowling attack, smashing six sixes in just seven balls, ultimately scoring 95 runs off 35 deliveries.

His sensational hitting overshadowed Nicholas Pooran's impressive century. While Pooran's unbeaten hundred came at a strike rate of 180, Dhillon's innings was played at an astounding strike rate of 271. Their partnership of 158 runs was dominated by Dhillon's pyrotechnics.

Former Punjab Kings head coach Anil Kumble once noted that Tajinder could hit a spinner for a six off his first ball, regardless of the circumstances. This ability was on full display as he dismantled the bowling of Raza, hitting him for three consecutive sixes. Dhillon's unique talent lies in his ability to powerfully hit spin bowling off the back foot, particularly in the 'V' region.

Tajinder's journey is a testament to perseverance and the pursuit of recognition. From being an overlooked player on the verge of being sidelined, he finally had his moment to shine, validating his decision to bet on himself.
