Former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin has advised the Indian team management to diversify their bowling strategy for the upcoming Test match against England, cautioning against over-relying on pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah. He specifically suggested including left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav in the second Test at Edgbaston to add variety to the attack.
Azharuddin's comments come after India's five-wicket defeat in the first Test at Headingley. Despite strong batting performances including centuries from Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal, repeated batting collapses and an apparent dependence on Bumrah for wickets and containing runs ultimately led to the loss.
“They are too much dependent on Bumrah. It’s not easy because you need more experienced bowlers, and they should play Kuldeep Yadav,” Azharuddin stated. He believes Yadav's inclusion would provide greater control and a different dimension to the bowling attack.
The second Test against England begins on July 2nd in Birmingham. With spin expected to play a significant role as the match progresses, Azharuddin emphasized the importance of selecting the correct bowling combination to ensure a strong comeback from the previous defeat.
“We lost because of the batting collapse, but now they have to pick the right players. Bowling has to be perfect,” he asserted.
Furthermore, Azharuddin defended the leadership of new Test captain Shubman Gill. "This is just his first match as captain. You can’t talk about captaincy so early. He should be given a fair chance, support, and time,” Azharuddin added, emphasizing the need for patience and support.
The former captain, who led India in 47 Tests, reiterated that providing players with time and avoiding premature criticism is crucial for their development and success.
