LAS VEGAS – Ilia Topuria delivered on his promise, securing a stunning first-round knockout against Charles Oliveira at UFC 317 to claim the vacant lightweight title. While Topuria predicted a quick finish, the swiftness of the victory still reverberated through the T-Mobile Arena.
Topuria (17-0) etched his name in UFC history, becoming only the 10th fighter to hold titles in two different weight classes. The decisive blow came at 2:27 of the first round. A precise right hand to Oliveira's chin was followed by a left hook that sealed the deal, sending the Brazilian to the canvas.
What makes Topuria's achievement even more remarkable is that he is the first undefeated fighter in UFC history to simultaneously hold two titles.
"I already said it," Topuria declared, "I represent the new era of mixed martial arts. This is the next level of the game." He showed unwavering confidence, even hosting a celebratory dinner the night before the fight.
The UFC immediately ignited a potential rivalry, bringing Paddy Pimblett into the cage after Topuria's victory. Pimblett, the No. 8-ranked lightweight from England, has a history with Topuria stemming from comments made about the Russo-Georgian War of 2008. Topuria, who represents Spain, has Georgian heritage.
The two fighters faced off in a heated exchange. Topuria had previously expressed his desire to fight Pimblett as his first title defense, ideally in Las Vegas.
"If he thinks he's ready, come on. You blond b----," Topuria challenged.
Beyond the post-fight theatrics, Topuria's performance was nothing short of dominant. He successfully defended against multiple takedown attempts from Oliveira and even reversed position when briefly taken to the ground.
This victory adds to Topuria's impressive resume, which now includes knockout wins over former featherweight champions Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway.
Looking ahead, Topuria has also expressed interest in facing former lightweight champion Islam Makhachev, who recently vacated his belt to move to welterweight.
