Kajol's return to the silver screen in the horror-thriller "Maa" has resonated with audiences, as the film has made a promising start at the domestic box office. The Vishal Furia directorial witnessed a significant surge on Saturday, propelling its India net total to an estimated ₹10.30 crore within just two days.
Released on Friday, "Maa" raked in ₹4.65 crore net on its opening day, according to sacnilk.com. This figure exceeded initial trade predictions, which had estimated an opening in the range of ₹3.50 to ₹4.50 crore. The production house celebrated the successful opening day on X, formerly Twitter, stating "Fear Finds Faith – Rs 4.93 Cr Day 1 NBOC India.”
The film experienced substantial growth on Saturday, adding ₹5.65 crore to its earnings, fueled by increased attendance during evening and night screenings. Hindi occupancy rates climbed to an average of 26.38% throughout the day, with night shows reaching a peak of approximately 38.45%.
"Maa" features Kajol alongside Indraneil Sengupta, Kherin Sharma, and Ronit Roy. The narrative centers on a mother who transforms into Goddess Kali to confront and dismantle a sinister curse born from fear, blood, and betrayal.
Marking her first significant theatrical release since "Salaam Venky" (2022), Kajol expressed her enthusiasm prior to the film's premiere.
"I am very excited. My film is releasing in theatres after a long time and I am extremely happy about it," she told ANI.
The actress further commented on her role and the film's genre, “Every actor has to reinvent himself or herself with time. I had never thought I would do a horror film, but here we are. I am extremely proud of this film. The script is quite good. I am a big mythological buff. I love our Indian mythology. We have so many stories. So, I think it was one of my favourite stories.”
Kajol concluded with her characteristic humor, “I am very grateful that I have done this film. I think we have made a very good film. Now the audience will tell... But, Maa ki kasam, humne achhi film banai hai,” she laughed.
Despite a limited release across 1,500 screens in India and competition from other films such as "Sitaare Zameen Par", "Kannappa", and "F1: The Movie," "Maa" has maintained a strong position and is on track for a successful opening weekend. Although, Kajol's horror film is currently trailing behind F1 which earned an estimated Rs 15 crore in just 2 days of its release. Meanwhile, the Aamir Khan starrer has shot past the Rs 100 crore mark at the box office.
