Aamir Khan, the renowned Bollywood actor, has recently opened up about the profound emotional distress he experienced following his divorce from his first wife, Reena Dutta. In a candid revelation, Khan admitted to struggling with suicidal thoughts and turning to alcohol as a coping mechanism after their separation.
During an interview with The Lallantop, Khan confessed that in the aftermath of his 2002 divorce, he "drank every day," explaining that it was an attempt to "kill myself." He further shared that he withdrew from social life, losing interest in work and personal interactions. Ironically, this difficult period coincided with the release of Lagaan, the film that propelled him to international fame.
"That same year, Lagaan was released, and a newspaper article called me ‘Man of the Year, Aamir Khan.’ I found it very ironical,” he recounted.
In a separate interview with Instant Bollywood, the actor revealed he was "in mourning" for two to three years following the breakup. "I wasn’t working or listening to scripts. I was alone at home, and for almost one and a half years, I drank a lot. You will be shocked to know that I was a teetotaler. After the split, I didn’t know what to do,” he stated.
Reflecting on his journey of healing, Aamir Khan emphasized the importance of confronting personal losses and accepting the past. “You have to face your losses and accept how important it was for you. Accept that what was once yours is not there now."
Aamir Khan and Reena Dutta were married for 16 years and share two children, Junaid and Ira. Despite their separation, they have maintained a cordial relationship and continue to co-parent their children.
